Dr. L. Scott Donald, is the owner of Studio A, a private piano studio and music consulting business in Austin, TX. A native of South Carolina, he earned his BM in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville, SC. He completed his MM in Applied Piano and DMA in Music Education/Piano Pedagogy from The University of Texas at Austin. His teachers include Danielle Martin (UT-Austin), John Roberts (Furman University) and he has worked in master classes with Richard Cass, Daniel Pollack, and Seymour Bernstein. During his graduate studies, he was a winner of the UT concerto competition and completed his Doctoral dissertation titled The Organization of Rehearsal Tempos and Efficiency of Motor Skill Acquisition in Piano Performance. Dr. Donald’s research in piano pedagogy has been featured at international and national conferences and he is active as a clinician for state and local teachers in Texas.
He serves on the Committee on Collegiate Pedagogy Teaching for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) and on the Editorial board for the Piano Pedagogy Forum. He has published articles and reviews in the Music Teachers National Association’s e-journal, American Music Teacher, Piano Pedagogy Forum, Keyboard Companion, Clavier Companion, and Texas Music Education Research. His current research focuses on exploring practice strategies and self-assessment for pre-collegiate piano students. Recent topics also include the use of video self-assessment of practice and developing sound expectations in pre-collegiate teaching.
Dr. Donald is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. In 2009, he was invited to join the faculty at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan, where he teaches during the summer. In 2010, Dr. Donald made his Carnegie Hall debut at the Weill Recital Hall in New York City. Between 1999 and 2010, he served as Administrative Director of the New School for Music Study in Kingston, NJ. Dr. Donald was been on the piano faculty at The University of Texas at San Antonio, The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ and faculty at the American Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ. He has maintained a private studio and taught pre-collegiate and adult students since 1996. When he is not teaching, performing, or engaging in research, Dr. Donald enjoys running and has completed multiple Half and Full Marathons including running the New York City, Philadelphia, Marine Corp, Chicago and Austin Marathons.
