Meet the Artists......

Salam Karahawa

Salam Karahawa is a violinist from Damascus, Syria. A graduate of the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, Salam attended American Voices Yes Academies in Damascus and Beirut, Lebanon, in 2009 and 2014 where he studied violin with Marc Thayer.  He spent this past year at Saint Louis University and as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Salam will begin studies at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the fall where he will study with David Bolyn.

Chwas Hasan

Chwas Hasan is a violist from Rania, Kurdistan, Iraq.  A graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts in Sulemaniyah, Chwas attended American Voices Yes Academies in Erbil, Sulemaniyah and Duhok, Iraq, from 2008-2013 where he studied with Marc Thayer. He spent this past year at Saint Louis University as a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.  Chwas began studying this past winter with Joanna Mendoza of the Arianna Quartet and he will continue his studies at UM-St. Louis in the fall.

Alan Salih

Alan Salih is a violinist from Sulemaniyah, Kurdistan, Iraq.  A graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts in Sulemaniyah, Alan attended American Voices Yes Academies in Erbil and Sulemaniyah, Iraq, from  in 2007-2008 where he studied with Marc Thayer. From 2008-2009 he attended Saint Louis University and played with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.  Currently Alan is studying with John McGrosso of the Arianna Quartet at UM-St. Louis and is married to Ashley, a native of St. Charles.
